Well, from what I've seen and heard amongst various sources, my Bichon puppy should have had her first season at approximately 6 months. She is just over 11 months and hasn't yet had her first season.

My question is, should I be worried?

For reference, we don't plan on breeding her, we were planning on having her spayed after her first season (that's what seems to be recommended).

I have had all my pets spayed before their first 'season' and never had any ill effects to their health. Anecdotal so not gonna put it as an answer, but I would assume that it would be okay as long as they are able to withstand the surgery. – Dennis Graves Oct 16 '13 at 23:09
  • This question appears to be off-topic because it is asking several questions; should I be worried? Is going to the vet the only option? Medical risks about spaying before first season. Also citing a faulty recommendation. I suggest a good edit. cheers – In loving memory of Dyani Oct 17 '13 at 7:10

@Skippy Asking more than one sub-question does not warrant it being off topic. If you use StackOverflow, you'll see that this is quite commonplace. What if I wanted to ask two questions about the same subject? They should just be one question. However, I do agree that the source was faulty, so I've rectified that. – mattytommo Oct 17 '13 at 8:33

@mattytommo: Such questions, on Stack Overflow, are still closable as Too Broad. I am not quite agreeing with Skippy that there are multiple questions here, not explicitly so in any case. – Martijn Pieters Oct 17 '13 at 10:00
  • I have a part answer to this about cats and will write up one about dogs soon pets.stackexchange.com/questions/760/… – In loving memory of Dyani Oct 17 '13 at 11:41

According to Understanding the Heat Cycle of Female Dogs, By Kelly Roper , there doesn't seem to be a hard fast rule as I'd been previously told (even by a Vet!!).

There is a loosely based guideline though:

While it is not a hard rule, most females come into their first heat cycle around six months of age, although some females wait as long 12 to 18 months old. Very large breed females may begin cycling as late as 24 months old.

  • In simpler terms. ..no don't worry, this is still well within the normal range. Good answer. – Beth Whitezel Feb 27 '14 at 7:17
