Since he's a bit obsessive, the fact that he had less hair there caused him to lick the area more and more, making it bigger and more sore. The solution for us was to apply a cream the vet prescribed to help his skin heal AND dress him up so he couldn't lick it anymore until his hair there was fully grown. In his case without the cloth to avoid further licking it would've never healed.
